South Africa is celebrating a diplomatic success, with President Cyril Ramaphosa confirming the US is in last-minute talks to reverse its G20 summit boycott. This major pivot validates Pretoria’s push for global cooperation, potentially ensuring all major economic powers are present at the Johannesburg meeting. Ramaphosa, however, remains unable to confirm the personal attendance of President Donald Trump.
The diplomatic friction was sparked by President Trump’s earlier claims alleging discrimination, violence, and land seizures targeting white Afrikaner farmers in South Africa. The South African government rejected these accusations as factually baseless and politically motivated, asserting they were an attempt to undermine the historic summit.
Speaking with European counterparts, Ramaphosa described the US outreach as a significant “positive sign” for international relations. He was vocal about the ineffectiveness of boycotts, arguing that genuine progress comes through inclusive global cooperation. He confirmed that the South African G20 agenda is deeply committed to advancing the economic and developmental interests of the Global South.
The most serious challenge to the summit’s integrity was the US note warning that the G20 could not release a unified final statement without American participation. South Africa firmly condemned this maneuver, labeling it an act of coercion that directly challenged the authority of multilateral decision-making. Officials stressed the unacceptable nature of an absent nation wielding such influence.
Ramaphosa concluded by reiterating South Africa’s unwavering commitment to achieving consensus among the diverse G20 members. While acknowledging the US’s future G20 presidency, he stressed that the forum’s legitimacy is fundamentally tied to its inclusivity and the spirit of shared responsibility, not to submission to the unilateral demands of one state.
