Peter Cullen, the iconic voice behind Transformers’ Optimus Prime and Winnie the Pooh’s Eeyore, passed away at 85. The Canadian actor died peacefully at his Los Angeles home on Wednesday, surrounded by loved ones, as confirmed by his family.
Born in Montreal, Cullen’s journey in the entertainment world began in Canadian television and radio. His breakout role came in 1984 when he first lent his voice to Optimus Prime in the Transformers animated series, a character he continued to portray across seven major films from 2007 to 2023, alongside various spin-offs. His deep, resonant voice also brought life to Eeyore, the beloved, if somewhat gloomy, donkey in The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh and numerous related projects.
Beyond these roles, Cullen’s talent was showcased in other notable performances, including the voice of KARR in Knight Rider, the menacing sounds of the creature in the 1987 film Predator, and King Kong in the 1976 remake. His portrayal of Optimus Prime was particularly influenced by his brother Larry, a former US Marine Corps captain, who advised him to create a character that was heroic yet gentle.
Cullen’s portrayal of Optimus Prime earned him a Daytime Emmy nomination in 2011, and his extensive contributions to the industry were recognized with a lifetime achievement award at the Children’s & Family Emmy Awards in 2023.
