Iran has released Dena Karari, a dual US-Iranian citizen who had been detained since December 2024, according to an announcement by US President Donald Trump. In a statement on Truth Social, Trump shared that Karari is now “safely outside of Iran, and in good condition,” attributing her release to a gesture of goodwill by Iranian authorities.
Jared Genser, Karari’s lawyer, confirmed the news, stating that she is safe and currently en route back to the United States. He praised the efforts of the Trump administration for playing a crucial role in securing her freedom.
Karari was initially detained during a trip to Iran in 2024, where she had gone to visit family. However, she was prevented from leaving the country and later faced charges of espionage following US and Israeli military actions against Iran in 2025.
