Oman has reiterated its dedication to ensuring maritime security and promoting freedom of navigation, strengthening ties with Southeast Asian nations. This commitment was emphasized during a ministerial meeting in Manila, Philippines, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation (TAC). Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi highlighted the critical role of international law, mutual respect, and peaceful collaboration in maintaining both regional and global stability.
The Omani foreign minister underscored the necessity of dialogue and diplomacy as tools for resolving disputes and building trust among countries. He pointed out that vital international waterways, such as the Strait of Hormuz, must remain open and secure for global trade and navigation. Al Busaidi emphasized the importance of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) as a fundamental framework for protecting maritime security, which in turn safeguards global trade, food security, and energy supplies.
In his address, the minister called for enhanced cooperation among coastal states and users of international shipping routes. He cited the collaboration between countries surrounding the Strait of Malacca and Singapore as a successful example of effective maritime security partnerships. This cooperation serves as a model for other regions to foster similar alliances to ensure secure and accessible waterways.
Oman’s commitment to bolstering maritime partnerships with ASEAN member states was also reaffirmed. The nation’s proactive stance in promoting regional cooperation reflects its strategic vision for maintaining open and safe international shipping lanes, which are crucial for global economic stability. By advocating for stronger maritime ties and adherence to international maritime law, Oman seeks to contribute to a stable and secure maritime environment worldwide.
