In a bid to de-escalate tensions between Iran and the United States, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi, in Beijing. Wang emphasized the importance of restraint and urged both nations to return to diplomatic negotiations, highlighting that the ongoing conflict does not serve the interests of either country or the international community at large.
Wang called for a revival of the negotiation process based on existing agreements and stressed the significance of reopening the Strait of Hormuz. He noted that maintaining stability in this crucial waterway is vital for global energy supplies and the integrity of international supply chains. The Chinese foreign minister also appealed to regional countries to contain the tensions and prevent them from affecting Yemen and the Red Sea, advocating for disputes to be settled through dialogue.
Araghchi echoed Wang’s sentiments, stating that Iran is ready to return to diplomatic channels while safeguarding its national interests. He expressed that Tehran views the existing US-Iran memorandum as still valid and is open to collaborating with neighboring countries to enhance regional security.
Furthermore, the Iranian foreign minister welcomed China’s initiatives for bolstering peace and security in the Middle East, expressing Tehran’s willingness to deepen cooperation with Beijing. The discussions underscore China’s role in seeking a peaceful resolution to the US-Iran conflict, emphasizing dialogue and negotiation as the pathways to stability.
