“Know the rules” is the first tip of pet travel, but what does that really mean? This guide decodes the often-confusing world of airline and railway pet policies, so you know exactly what to look for and what questions to ask.
For airlines, the first distinction is “in-cabin” versus “cargo.” In-cabin is for small pets whose carrier can fit under the seat in front of you. There are strict weight and carrier dimension limits. Cargo travel is for larger animals and has its own set of IATA (International Air Transport Association) regulations. You must also ask about breed restrictions (many brachycephalic or “flat-faced” breeds are not allowed in cargo) and temperature embargoes for hot or cold weather.
For railways, policies can vary dramatically. In India, for example, Indian Railways has specific rules about booking a two-berth or four-berth first-class compartment exclusively, or transporting pets in the luggage van. You cannot simply bring a pet into a regular carriage. You must check the exact procedure, which often involves contacting the parcel office and getting your pet certified as “fit to travel” by a vet.
For both, the common denominators are health certificates and carrier specifications. A health certificate, usually issued by a vet within a few days of travel, is a standard requirement. The carrier must be secure, ventilated, and leak-proof. Always call the specific airline or railway directly, as website information can sometimes be out of date. Decoding these rules is the foundation of a successful trip.
