Asthma, for instance, may not always manifest as a persistent cough. Instead, individuals might experience episodes of breathlessness, wheezing, or chest tightness, particularly during physical activity, nighttime, or after exposure to irritants like dust and pollution. These symptoms can fluctuate, often being mistaken for allergies or poor fitness.
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is another condition where symptoms might be subtle at first. A hallmark sign is gradually worsening breathlessness, making tasks like climbing stairs or walking uphill increasingly challenging. This slow progression can lead some to misattribute their declining stamina to aging, especially among those with a history of smoking.
Lung cancer, in its early stages, may not present obvious symptoms. When they do appear, they might include a persistent or changing cough, chest pain, unexplained weight loss, or recurrent chest infections.
