India clinched the Asian Games men’s cricket gold medal with a 19-run victory over Pakistan in a gripping final held at Korogi Sports Park in Nisshin, Japan. This win marked India’s successful defense of their title, showcasing their dominance in the T20 format against their arch-rivals.
Opting to bat first, India made a strong start, posting a formidable total of 211/6. Abhishek Sharma was instrumental in setting the pace, scoring a quickfire half-century that helped India reach 81/2 in the Powerplay, marking their highest Powerplay score against Pakistan in T20 internationals. Although Pakistan’s bowlers, led by Arafat Minhas, Ahmed Daniyal, and Abrar Ahmed, managed to slow down the scoring rate in the middle overs, India’s batsmen regained momentum towards the end of their innings.
Tilak Varma played a crucial role in the late stages, smashing an unbeaten 51 off just 22 balls. His partnership with Shivam Dube, who added 27 runs, was key in pushing India’s total beyond the 200-run mark and setting a challenging target for Pakistan.
Pakistan’s chase was spearheaded by Hasan Nawaz, who kept the pressure on India with a remarkable unbeaten 96 from 51 deliveries. His partnership of 87 runs with Saim Ayub posed a significant threat, as Pakistan seemed poised to overhaul the target.
However, the Indian bowlers held their nerve in the closing stages of the match. Washington Sundar bowled a critical 18th over that disrupted Pakistan’s momentum, and Jasprit Bumrah further tightened the screws in the penultimate over. Needing 33 runs from the final over, Pakistan fell short as Shivam Dube successfully defended the target, ensuring a 19-run victory for India.
The victory not only secured another gold medal for India but also reinforced their strong record against Pakistan in T20 internationals. Both teams demonstrated high levels of skill and competitiveness, making the match a memorable encounter in the Asian Games cricket history.
