Former U.S. President Donald Trump has renewed his endorsement of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as Israel approaches parliamentary elections. Trump took to Truth Social to describe Netanyahu as an “outstanding Warrior Prime Minister,” emphasizing their collaboration on military operations against Iran. He claimed that these joint efforts had substantially weakened Iran’s military capabilities and economy, citing a U.S. naval blockade affecting Iranian oil exports.
Trump’s endorsement comes as Netanyahu faces a crucial electoral test amid public dissatisfaction over security issues following the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack. The attacks have led to ongoing conflicts in Gaza, Lebanon, and Iran, intensifying the political debate in Israel. Opinion polls suggest that Netanyahu’s governing coalition may struggle to retain power, making the election pivotal for his political future.
Netanyahu acknowledged Trump’s endorsement by sharing the message on social media. While reports suggested that Netanyahu had sought this public support, a spokesperson for his Likud party denied that the prime minister requested Trump’s endorsement.
Gadi Eisenkot, Netanyahu’s main rival and a former military chief, responded by asserting that the decision of leadership lies with the Israeli people. He expressed respect for Trump but highlighted the importance of Israel’s democratic process in deciding its leadership.
