President Donald Trump provided explicit justification Friday for South Africa’s exclusion from the 2026 G20 Summit in Miami. The decision is rooted in allegations regarding the treatment of white farming communities and descendants of European settlers.
Trump’s lengthy social media post outlined what he characterizes as systematic human rights violations against Afrikaners and people of Dutch, French, and German ancestry in South Africa. The President’s statement included explicit claims about violence and property seizures affecting these populations. He accused the South African government of complicity through inaction and denial.
Last weekend’s G20 gathering in Johannesburg attracted numerous international leaders, with India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi among the prominent attendees. However, the United States maintained a conspicuous absence, with no official delegation participating in the proceedings. This boycott marked a clear diplomatic message about Washington’s position on South African domestic policies.
Additional controversy emerged from disputes over the ceremonial transfer of G20 presidency responsibilities. Trump claimed that South African authorities improperly handled the handover ceremony despite having a US Embassy representative present at the closing event. The South African government countered by clarifying that they followed appropriate diplomatic channels, completing the transfer at their international relations headquarters given the absence of an official US summit delegation.
President Cyril Ramaphosa characterized the exclusion as regrettable while maintaining his government’s interest in diplomatic engagement with the United States. The specific allegations Trump raised about persecution and genocide of white farmers have been subjects of extensive investigation and have been consistently discredited by the South African government, white community leaders, and independent researchers. Despite this pattern of debunking, these claims continue to circulate in political discourse and influence bilateral relations.
