An oil tanker named EL GAIA caught fire after striking naval mines while navigating the Strait of Hormuz, according to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). The IRGC reported that the tanker was attempting to traverse a restricted route in the southern part of the crucial waterway, which Iranian authorities had previously declared off-limits. Despite efforts to control the blaze, the fire could not be contained, officials confirmed.
The IRGC emphasized that prior warnings had been issued regarding the dangers associated with using the prohibited route. Following this incident, they reiterated that the Strait of Hormuz remains closed and tightly controlled by Iranian naval forces. In conjunction with these developments, Iran’s Persian Gulf Strait Authority issued a caution to insurance companies, protection and indemnity insurers, and classification societies, advising them against offering services to vessels that violate the maritime traffic restrictions imposed in the area.
The Strait of Hormuz is a vital conduit for global energy supplies, accommodating a significant portion of the world’s oil and gas transportation. The imposition of shipping restrictions through this strategic passage has sparked concerns about potential disruptions to international energy markets. Such concerns have been amplified by the recent tightening of control over passage through the strait, a move by Iran that followed US-Israeli airstrikes on Iran on February 28.
