Accompanying Pezeshkian in New York is Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, who arrived on Monday to spearhead Iran’s diplomatic delegation at the UN gathering. Upon arrival, Araghchi engaged in a phone conversation with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to discuss agenda items pertinent to the assembly. He outlined Iran’s primary goal of using the platform to underscore the legitimacy and rights of the Iranian populace.
The Iranian delegation’s participation in the assembly occurs amid ongoing tensions in the Middle East, particularly concerning the Strait of Hormuz, a pivotal channel for international oil and gas shipments. Iran has communicated conditions for reopening this strategic waterway through Qatar, in response to measures imposed by the United States targeting Iranian ports.
