WhatsApp is introducing a significant update to its platform that will enable users to engage through usernames instead of relying on phone numbers. This new feature is being gradually rolled out, allowing users to secure unique usernames before the anticipated global release later this year. Once implemented, the change will allow individuals to initiate chats using just a username, eliminating the need to disclose their mobile numbers.

The process for setting up a username is straightforward. Users can create a unique handle within the application. When someone wishes to contact them, they only need to know this username, as phone numbers will remain hidden. In instances where a desired username is unavailable, WhatsApp will offer alternative suggestions generated by the app. A crucial aspect of this privacy-focused feature is the absence of a public username directory, ensuring that users can only be contacted by those who already have their specific username.

To reserve a username, WhatsApp users should update their app and navigate to the Settings menu, followed by Account, and then Username. As the feature is progressively becoming available, users will receive notifications when it is accessible in their region. Given WhatsApp’s extensive user base, early reservations are encouraged to secure preferred usernames amid high competition.

Enhancing privacy further, the system will offer an optional “username key” that provides an additional security layer. This key can be shared separately, allowing users to control who is permitted to start conversations with them. The feature aims to benefit not only individual users but also creators, businesses, and public accounts, enabling them to align their WhatsApp identity with other social media handles like Instagram and Facebook.

Notably, the use of usernames is optional, allowing those who prefer using phone numbers to continue doing so. Users will be informed via in-app notifications as this feature becomes available in different regions, ensuring a smooth transition for all involved.
